For more than 20 years I've been a fan of Van Halen, listening to their music as I do my work. I attend their concerts, watch their videos and listen to all of the albums never tiring of Edward Van Halen's genius on the guitar, Alex Van Halen's thundering drums, Michael Anthony's bass that gives the band color and backbone and the vocal ranges they've had over the years from David Lee Roth, to Sammy Hagar to Gary Cherone. When Brad Starks, the webmaster for Van Halen's official website, asked me to do a series of opening graphics for the site, I was more than happy to do it. Brad's idea was to use the band's logo in everyday settings any way I could come up with. What made this fun to do was the variety of techniques and styles I got to use to accomplish this. From a simple cartoon parodying the Simpsons, to a variety of CAD programs to create objects in a cyber-world, the sky is the limit. The graphic was on the opening page and was rotated every two weeks from March through December 1999. Although "Valbarella" wasn't actually used on the site, I've included it here as the drawing kind of took on a life of its own after I posted it to the Van Halen mailing list. After taking a look at the graphics, stop by Van Halen's website. Brad has done a remarkable job satisfying Van Halen's fans, the most loyal fans in rock.
